Kepa Kurl (Noongar Country)

Gidday and welcome to Esperance! As you step off the ship, you will quickly realise that the photos you have seen of this coastline haven’t been touched up—the water really is that unbelievable shade of turquoise and the sand truly is as white as snow. There is a wonderfully remote, untouched feel to this part of Western Australia that makes it special. It is the kind of place where the pace slows down the moment you arrive, and the crisp Southern Ocean air instantly clears your head.

While the beaches like Lucky Bay and Hellfire Bay are the star attractions, I recommend taking a bit of time to soak up the local town vibe too. Esperance has a rugged, salt-of-the-earth character that is Refreshingly unpretentious. Whether you are wandering along the foreshore, popping into a local gallery, or simply enjoying a flat white while looking out over the Recherche Archipelago, you will find the locals are as warm as the summer sun. It is a spectacular corner of the world that feels like a hidden gem, and I know you are going to love exploring it.

Where the ship docks

In Esperance, your ship will typically dock at the Port of Esperance, specifically at Berth 1 or 2, which are the primary berths used for cruise vessels. Because you are docked at an industrial port, you will walk straight off the ship; however, for safety reasons, you cannot walk through the port area and must take a mandatory, free shuttle bus to the town center, which is about 3 km away.

The port is a working industrial facility rather than a dedicated passenger terminal, so facilities at the pier are limited. Inside the terminal area, you will find basic amenities including clean restrooms, a staffed information desk with local volunteers to provide maps and guides, free Wi-Fi, and covered seating areas. The facility is also equipped with wheelchair-friendly ramps and lifts to ensure accessibility for all passengers.

What's around the port

Upon stepping off your ship at the Port of Esperance, you will find yourself in a highly secure, working industrial deep-sea port. Because it is an active facility handling iron ore, grain, and fuel, there is no public pedestrian access and you cannot walk straight off the ship into town; instead, a mandatory complimentary shuttle bus is provided for the 3-kilometre journey to the town centre. Within the immediate 5 to 10-minute walk of the gangway, you will see the infrastructure of a major maritime hub, including heavy machinery, storage silos, and three large berths. To reach the scenic foreshore promenade, local cafes, and the Esperance Museum, you must take the five-minute shuttle ride which drops you near the Museum Village and the heart of the community.

Getting around

  • Walkability: The Esperance town centre and foreshore are very walkable with flat terrain and well-maintained pathways. Most local shops, cafes, and the museum are within easy reach on foot; however, a shuttle is recommended for the 1.5 km journey from the port to the town centre. Beyond the town, the landscape becomes more rugged with coastal trails and hilly national parks that require sturdy footwear and a vehicle to access.
  • Public Transport: Local bus services are very limited, with the Transesperance town bus typically running only a few times a day on weekdays. There is no specific smart card like an Opal or myki; passengers usually pay the driver directly. For cruise visitors, a dedicated 5-minute shuttle bus often operates between the port and the town centre to bridge the distance.
  • Taxis/Rideshare: Taxis are the primary on-demand transport option, and it is highly recommended to book the Esperance Taxi Service in advance, especially for airport transfers or during ship arrivals. While Uber is technically available in parts of Western Australia, its presence in Esperance is extremely limited or non-existent, making local taxis and pre-booked private transfers the more reliable choice for getting around.

Practical Information

  • Esperance does not use a city-wide transit card like Opal or myki; local transport is limited, so most passengers rely on walking, taxis, or pre-arranged cruise shuttles.
  • Strict Australian biosecurity laws are in force; do not take any fresh food, fruit, vegetables, or meat products off the ship to avoid significant on-the-spot fines.
  • Tipping is not required or expected in Australia as service is included in the price, though small tips for exceptional service are appreciated.
  • All displayed prices are final and inclusive of 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST), so there are no surprise costs at checkout.
