Karta (Ngarrindjeri Country)

Gidday and welcome to Kangaroo Island! There is a real sense of stepping back into a simpler, quieter time the moment you tender into Penneshaw. While it is Australia’s third-largest island, it feels more like a giant, open-air sanctuary where the human population is well and truly outnumbered by the locals—the kangaroos, koalas, and wallabies. The vibe here is wonderfully laid-back and unpretentious; you will find straight, quiet roads cutting through ancient gum forests and small townships where life moves at a refreshingly slow pace.

As you explore, you will notice the island’s raw, rugged beauty is matched by its incredible resilience and flavour. From the salt-spray air at Seal Bay to the artisan honey farms and eucalyptus distilleries, there is an authentic, salt-of-the-earth character to everything here. Whether you are wandering the clifftop trails or simply enjoying a flat white by the harbour, the island’s natural energy and wild, unspoiled landscapes make it a truly special place to reconnect with the outdoors. Enjoy your time in this unique South Australian gem!

Where the ship docks

You will need to catch a tender boat to reach the shore at Kangaroo Island, as cruise ships do not dock directly at a wharf. Instead, ships anchor offshore in the waters near Penneshaw and transport passengers via the ship’s tender vessels to the Penneshaw Jetty (the main ferry terminal).

The arrival point is the Penneshaw ferry terminal building, which serves as the island’s primary gateway. Inside the terminal, you will find essential facilities including a visitor information desk, public restrooms, seating areas, and a small gift shop selling local souvenirs. The terminal is located right in the heart of Penneshaw, putting you within steps of a small supermarket, local cafes, and the town’s small beach immediately upon disembarking the tender.

What's around the port

When you arrive at Kangaroo Island, your ship will typically anchor offshore, and you will tender into the purpose-built wharf at Penneshaw. This is not a secure industrial port; instead, you step directly onto a scenic coastal landing just steps away from the heart of the village. Within a 5 to 10-minute walk, you can explore the historic township, which features local cafes, the Sealink ferry terminal visitor center, and the iconic Penneshaw Hotel overlooking the water. Immediately adjacent to the tender pier is the Kangaroo Island Sculpture Trail, a winding path through native bushland filled with unique art installations. You are also right next to the pristine white sands of Penneshaw Beach (Hog Bay), where you might spot dolphins playing in the surf. On cruise ship days, the local oval often hosts the Penneshaw Markets, providing easy access to local honey, crafts, and regional food within a short stroll from the arrival point.

Getting around

  • Walkability: The township of Penneshaw is very walkable and relatively flat, with the town centre located only a few hundred metres from the wharf. However, as Kangaroo Island is exceptionally large, walking is only suitable for the immediate port area; reaching the island’s famous wildlife parks and natural landmarks requires motorised transport.
  • Public Transport: There is no metropolitan public transport system or “tap-and-go” transit card network on the island. A regional shuttle bus connects Penneshaw to American River and Kingscote, but services are limited and timed to meet ferry arrivals. It is essential to book these coach transfers in advance or join an organised shore excursion to explore beyond the arrival port.
  • Taxis/Rideshare: Rideshare services like Uber do not operate on the island, and traditional on-demand taxis are virtually non-existent. You must pre-book private transfers or hire a car well in advance of your arrival. Because of the high demand during cruise ship visits, arranging your transport or tours weeks before you dock is highly recommended.

Practical Information

  • Kangaroo Island does not use mainland transit cards like Opal or myki; local transport is limited to pre-booked tours, taxis, or hire cars, so it is essential to arrange your transport before disembarking in Penneshaw.
  • Strict biosecurity laws are in place to protect the island’s unique ecosystem; do not bring any honey products, unwashed potatoes, fresh fruit, or vegetables onto the island, and ensure footwear is clean of soil.
  • Tipping is not expected or required in Australia as service is included in the price, though a small tip for exceptional service is always appreciated.
  • All displayed prices in shops and restaurants are final and inclusive of 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST), so there are no hidden fees at checkout.

Top Sights & Attractions

Essentials & Amenities

Free Wi-Fi is available at the SeaLink Ferry Terminal in Penneshaw, which serves as the primary arrival point for cruise passengers. Once in town, passengers can access free Wi-Fi at several nearby businesses and public spots within a 5-minute walk of the wharf, including the Penneshaw Pub and the Seafront Hotel. The Penneshaw Community Library also provides a reliable public connection for those needing to catch up on emails or browsing.

There is no dedicated pharmacy in Penneshaw; however, the Penneshaw IGA stocks basic over-the-counter medicinal essentials. For a full-service pharmacy, passengers would need to travel to Kingscote (approximately a 45-minute drive) to visit the Kingscote Pharmacy or Drakes Supermarket.
