Kia ora and welcome to New Plymouth! There is a real sense of drama to this corner of the country, where the rugged Tasman Sea coastline meets the perfectly symmetrical peak of Taranaki Maunga. It is a city that feels deeply connected to its landscape, offering a refreshing mix of wild natural beauty and a refined, creative spirit that you will notice the moment you begin to explore.
Once you are on the ground, I recommend heading straight for the Coastal Walkway to get a feel for the local pace of life. You will find a community that truly prizes its outdoor spaces and world-class art, from the kinetic sculptures of Len Lye to the lush sanctuary of Pukekura Park. New Plymouth does not try too hard to impress, yet its combination of surf culture and contemporary style makes it one of the most genuine and vibrant stops on any New Zealand itinerary.
Where the ship docks
In New Plymouth, you will walk straight off your ship as it docks at Port Taranaki, primarily at the Blyde Wharf. While the port is a working industrial facility, it is well-equipped to welcome cruise passengers with a dedicated cruise terminal area located right at the wharf.
Inside the terminal facilities at Blyde Wharf, you will find essential amenities including free Wi-Fi, restrooms, and a visitor information desk staffed by the local isite team to help with maps and activity bookings. Because walking through the industrial port zone is generally prohibited for safety, a free shuttle service runs every 15 minutes from the terminal to the Puke Ariki Landing in the heart of the city center, which is just a 5-minute drive away.

What's around the port
Port Taranaki is a secure industrial facility, and for safety reasons, passengers are not permitted to walk from the ship’s gangway to the port gates; a mandatory free shuttle is provided to transport you to the port entrance. Once dropped at the shuttle stop just outside the gates, you are immediately at the western starting point of the award-winning New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. Within a 5 to 10-minute walk of this drop-off point, you can access Ngamotu Beach, a safe and calm swimming spot popular with locals, as well as the base of Paritutu Rock, which offers a challenging scramble for panoramic views of the coastline and the Sugar Loaf Islands. The immediate area around the port gates also features several cafes, a local yacht club, and a few marine-themed retail shops, though the main city center and its primary attractions are located approximately 3 kilometers away and are best reached by continuing on the shuttle or taking a 30-minute scenic walk along the promenade.
Getting around
- Walkability: The New Plymouth city centre is relatively flat and easy to navigate on foot, especially along the scenic 13km Coastal Walkway. However, Port Taranaki is about 3km from the main CBD, so while fit walkers can enjoy the coastal path into town, others may prefer transport for the initial leg.
- Public Transport: The Citylink bus network connects the port area (Moturoa) to the CBD via Route 1. You can pay using a contactless debit/credit card, a digital wallet on your phone, or the Motu Move smart card; cash is generally not accepted on these services.
- Taxis/Rideshare: Taxis are available at the port and can be pre-booked or found at ranks in the city centre. Rideshare services like Uber also operate in the area, providing a convenient way to reach local attractions like Pukekura Park or the Len Lye Centre.
