Kia ora and welcome to Papeete! There is a special kind of magic that hits you the moment you step off the ship and into the heart of Tahiti’s bustling capital. While many travellers use this as a quick jumping-off point for the outer islands, there is a real, grounded energy here that is well worth your time. The air is thick with the scent of tiare flowers and sea salt, and the vibe is a unique blend of sophisticated French flair and that unmistakable, laid-back Polynesian soul. It is a place where you can find world-class black pearls and fine pastries just a few blocks away from the rugged, colourful chaos of the local markets.
I highly recommend spending your time wandering through the Marché de Papeete to see the real rhythm of the city. It is where you will find the locals socialising over piles of fresh vanilla beans and colourful sarongs, and it gives you a much better sense of the island’s character than any postcard could. Don’t be afraid to wander the side streets for a taste of poisson cru or to find a quiet spot along the waterfront to watch the outrigger canoes. Papeete might feel a bit more lived-in and energetic than the sleepy lagoons you see in brochures, but that is exactly what makes it so special—it is the beating heart of French Polynesia, and it is wonderful to be a part of it for a day.
Where the ship docks
In Papeete, you will walk straight off your ship as it docks directly at the Port Autonome de Papeete, located in the heart of the city. Most cruise ships berth at the dedicated Papeete Cruise Terminal (also known as the Te Anuanua terminal) at the Port de Plaisance, which features a North Pier of 300 metres and a South Pier of 350 metres. This central location means you are just a five-minute walk from the famous Papeete Market and the downtown CBD.
The brand-new, modern cruise terminal building is an open and breezy 30,000-square-foot facility designed for efficiency and comfort. Inside, passengers will find check-in counters, dedicated luggage rooms, and customs and immigration facilities. The terminal also provides accessible restrooms, plenty of seating areas, a snack bar/café, and duty-free shopping. A visitor information centre is located right next to the terminal to assist with last-minute tours and island information.

What's around the port
When you disembark in Papeete, you step directly from the ship into the heart of the city’s vibrant waterfront; there is no need for a shuttle as the terminal is located on the main downtown promenade. Within a 5-minute walk, you will find the Tahiti Visitor Center just across the street, as well as the bustling Vai’ete Square, which is famous for its “roulottes” (food trucks) that gather in the evenings. The scenic waterfront path stretches in both directions, offering immediate access to the Marina du Port de Papeete and the lush Paofai Gardens to the south.
The city’s most iconic attraction, the Marché de Papeete (Municipal Market), is an easy 5 to 10-minute walk from the pier, where you can browse two floors of local crafts, black pearls, and tropical produce. Also within this short walking radius is the Notre Dame Cathedral with its distinct yellow facade, the Vaima Shopping Centre, and numerous boutiques and cafes along the Boulevard de la Reine Pomare IV. The Moorea Ferry Terminal is located immediately adjacent to the cruise docks, making it incredibly simple to arrange a quick trip to the neighboring island.
Getting around
- Walkability: Downtown Papeete and the waterfront area are generally flat and easy to explore on foot. Most major sights, including the municipal market, shops, and the ferry terminal, are within a comfortable 10 to 15-minute stroll from the cruise pier, though you should be mindful of the tropical heat and humidity.
- Public Transport: Local transport is provided by a network of modern white buses and a few traditional “Le Trucks” (colourful, open-sided vehicles). Fares are inexpensive and generally paid in cash directly to the driver; there is currently no integrated contactless tap-and-go system or transit card required. While the service is frequent in the city centre during the week, it is very limited on Saturdays and typically does not run on Sundays.
- Taxis/Rideshare: Taxis are widely available at designated stands near the market and Centre Vaima, or they can be flagged down on the street. It is important to agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey as many vehicles do not use meters, and surcharges apply for night-time trips. Uber and other international rideshare apps do not operate in French Polynesia.
Practical Information
- Public transport is cash-based; use “Le Truck” for a local experience or taxis for convenience, as there are no electronic transit card requirements like Opal or Myki.
- Strict biosecurity rules apply; you must declare all items of animal or plant origin, including food, seeds, and flowers, to the biosecurity counter upon arrival to protect the island’s fragile ecosystem.
- Tipping is not a part of Tahitian tradition and is not expected, though a small amount for exemplary service at hotels or restaurants is always appreciated.
- All displayed prices in French Polynesia are inclusive of taxes, so the price you see is the final price you pay with no hidden fees at checkout.
